To this end, the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) and the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS) have played a fundamental role in promoting and developing alternative methods to animal testing.

Importantly, validation serves as a filter to ensure that only test methods capable of producing data that help meet legislative requirements (e.g. EU REACH legislation) are accepted as official testing tools and, due to globalization markets, recognized at an international level (for example, through inclusion in the OECD testing guidelines).
