The search for ethical and effective methods for evaluating the safety of cosmetic products has been an increasing priority in this industry.<\/p>\n

To this end, the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) and the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS) have played a fundamental role in promoting and developing alternative methods to animal testing.<\/p>\n

Alternative methods to animal testing, such as in vitro<\/em> It is in silico<\/em>, have proven effective in predicting the safety of cosmetic products without the need to use animals. These methods offer several advantages, including the ability to evaluate a large number of substances quickly, accurately, and ethically.<\/p>\n

ICCS and IIVS have been working closely with governments, businesses and non-governmental organizations to promote the acceptance and use of these alternative methods. In the area of toxicity testing, validation plays an indispensable role: \u201calternative approaches\u201d are increasingly replacing animal models as predictive tools and it is necessary to demonstrate that these new methods are fit for purpose.<\/p>\n

Alternative approaches include test methods in vitro<\/em>, test-free approaches such as predictive computer models.<\/p>\n

Data generated with alternative approaches is ultimately used for decision making on public health and environmental protection<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is, therefore, essential that the underlying methods and methodologies are thoroughly characterized, evaluated and documented transparently through validation studies involving impartial stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Importantly, validation serves as a filter to ensure that only test methods capable of producing data that help meet legislative requirements (e.g. EU REACH legislation) are accepted as official testing tools and, due to globalization markets, recognized at an international level (for example, through inclusion in the OECD testing guidelines).<\/p>\n
